atm my main use for my camera (a sony trv950 currently) is filming bands who play at venues locally, including us bands and local uk bands. whilst i wanna progress into "proper" filmmaking, i find this enjoyable as my love of music goes alongside my love of movies/cinema.

i was talking to my friends band who are putting out a record on a small label soon, about possibly shooting a promo video. the band themselves are getting quite popular amongst the local kids and will probably be growing thruout the year, so i'd be proud to be part of their growth. they play metalbased hardcore, and their live show is very lively (rather than just standing there and playing) so capturing that aspect is something i'm desperate to achieve.

it looks like i'll have maybe a second camera at best (preferably something to the same spec as my own, preferably same make/lens to match in post) but i've never used lights etc (as i have to make-do with whatevers preset in the venues) so the only info i know on em is what i've read on this site. how much is rental cost in the uk for just a few standard lamps ?

am i right in thinking the easiest way of filming is to modify a cd track with a countin, pump it thru the PA and record several times from various angles/closeups then sync in post to the various clips, edit any opticals then render back to DV/DVD ?

any tips on how to go about this will be greatly appreciated, as its the first time i'll be telling anyone what to do very much looking forward to it, and hopefully will look back in a few years going "my god, i knew so little then"

Well I don't have tons of experience either (working on first actual film), I usually try too use a digital editor on that sort of thing.
I have no idea about lights thou.
It is very helpful to get the band to record a studio take for a CD and then film them live, also filming a few seperate instances like the bass player buying coffee at a starbucks can add interest.
You then use a program like Quick Mix or some other sequencer to put it all together.

i like the idea of having cuts of the song to use too, i think i'll do that.. cheers!

as for the editing, yeah it'll most likely be done in vegas. might actually learn how to use the Take system now! will have to talk to the band themselves about what they want, but i agree it'd be nice to have shots outside of the live performance, just to break it up so its not just 3 1/2 mins of the same thing.

thanks for the replies

one technique is coming up with a story that resembles the song's point. film the storyline aspect seperately and use it to intersperse the footage of the band performing.

similar to the cutaway idea i guess...
